Job Shadowing Expansion
The Job Shadowing Expansion program offers youth the chance to observe and learn from experienced professionals in a variety of skilled trades. This hands-on exposure helps participants better understand the demands and requirements of different careers, allowing them to make more informed decisions about their future.

Program Duration and Requirements
Duration: 4 weeks
Age Group: 16-24 years old
Requirements: Open to all, no previous experience needed.
Career Opportunities
Job shadowing will help participants decide which career path they want to pursue, while building connections that may lead to internships, apprenticeships, or full-time jobs.
Carpentry
Carpentry is a foundational skill that allows youth to engage in real-world construction tasks. This skill involves understanding and applying the principles of woodworking, from the basics of measuring and cutting to advanced techniques for building structures.
Key Skills:- Advanced Tool Handling: Proficiency in using both manual and electric tools (saws, drills, hammers, etc.) to build and shape wood-based projects with precision.
- Structural Framing: Knowledge of creating strong frames for walls, roofs, and floors, ensuring durability and safety in construction.
- Project Planning & Design: The ability to read blueprints and translate them into practical construction plans, estimating materials and time needed for completion.
- Finishing Techniques: Expertise in applying final touches such as sanding, painting, staining, and sealing wood to enhance both its appearance and durability.
- Building Codes and Safety Standards: Understanding local building codes and safety practices in the carpentry trade to ensure work is compliant with regulations and is done safely.
Electricity
Electrical work is a critical skill in both residential and commercial settings. This involves understanding electrical systems, components, and their proper installation and maintenance. Participants will gain hands-on experience with wiring, connections, and troubleshooting electrical issues.
Key Skills:- Circuit Design & Installation: Knowledge of how to design and install circuits, ensuring they are properly wired to provide safe and efficient power distribution.
- Electrical Troubleshooting: Ability to diagnose issues within electrical systems, identifying problems with wiring, breakers, and outlets and correcting them safely.
- Device Installation: Skills in installing electrical devices such as light fixtures, outlets, and switches, ensuring they meet safety standards.
- Understanding Codes & Regulations: In-depth knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local regulations to ensure work is performed safely and legally.
- Safety Protocols: Emphasis on safety when handling electricity, including proper grounding, circuit testing, and the use of protective gear to prevent accidents.
Plumbing
Plumbing is a crucial trade that focuses on installing and repairing water systems and pipelines. This skill set enables youth to understand the complexities of water flow, drainage systems, and sanitary installations in both residential and commercial environments.
Key Skills:- Pipe Installation & Maintenance: Proficiency in installing and repairing pipes for water supply, drainage, and sewage systems, ensuring proper flow and functionality.
- System Layout & Design: Knowledge of how to design and install entire plumbing systems that integrate with homes, commercial buildings, and public utilities.
- Leak Detection & Repair: Expertise in identifying leaks in plumbing systems and efficiently repairing them to prevent water damage.
- Water Heater Installation: Skills in installing, repairing, and maintaining water heating systems, including tankless, electric, and gas water heaters.
- Plumbing Safety: Knowledge of safety procedures when working with pressurized systems, hazardous materials, and tools, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
Life Skills
Life skills are an integral part of the Job Shadowing Expansion program. These skills help youth not only excel in their professional careers but also thrive in their personal lives. From communication to problem-solving, life skills are essential for success in any field.
Key Skills:- Effective Communication: Understanding the importance of clear, concise, and respectful communication with coworkers, supervisors, and clients. Includes both verbal and written communication.
- Teamwork & Collaboration: Developing the ability to work well in a team, contributing to collective goals while respecting diverse perspectives.
- Time Management & Organization: The ability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and stay organized in a fast-paced work environment.
- Problem Solving & Critical Thinking: Developing the skills to analyze situations, think critically, and find solutions to challenges in the workplace.
